Yiwu: the small-commodity market and the factories that supply it.

Yiwu is where the small-commodity world is physically located — the market, the factories behind it and the trade infrastructure around it, all inside one city you can cross in thirty minutes.

Best for: creators filming dense market aisles, and buyers assembling wide low-MOQ assortments.

  • Yiwu International Trade Market — widely described as the world’s largest small-commodity market
  • Extremely broad, low-MOQ categories
  • Comparatively filming-friendly

Why this cluster

Why Yiwu, rather than somewhere bigger.

Yiwu is not one market — it is a market plus a manufacturing hinterland. That combination is what makes a five-day trip here unusually productive: you can see a product being sold upstairs and see it being made the same afternoon.

For creators it is one of the most filmable clusters we work in. Market aisles are public, visually dense and almost always open to being filmed with permission from the individual stall.

For buyers it is where wide, low-quantity assortments are realistic. If your product strategy is “many SKUs, small volumes”, this is the one Chinese city built around that idea.

The trade-off is real too: plenty of businesses here are trading companies. That is a normal part of the Yiwu model, and it is exactly why we run the five checks rather than trusting a business card.

Typical MOQ

Low

Many stalls and factories here will quote hundreds rather than thousands for stock items.

Category breadth

Very high

Hundreds of thousands of product lines across the districts of the International Trade Market.

Factory density

High

Factories sit in the surrounding towns, usually 30–60 minutes off.

Categories & markets

What is actually made here.

Categories first, then where inside the cluster each one trades.

  • Small commoditiesHousehold goods, kitchenware, storage, seasonal decorations — the core of the small-commodities market.
  • Gifts & stationeryPackaging-driven categories where dozens of suppliers sell near-identical products.
  • Jewellery & accessoriesCostume jewellery, hair accessories, watches — dense clusters within dedicated market districts.
  • ToysBoth market stalls and dedicated toy manufacturers in surrounding Jinhua and Shantou.
  • Home & storagePlastics, textiles and simple assembly — often the easiest category to film end to end.
  • Promotional goodsPrinting, lanyards, badges, packaging — print-led rather than tooling-led.

Sample structure

Two days, sequenced: market first, then factories.

Yiwu rewards sequencing. See the market first, then take what you learned into the factories.

  1. DAY 1 · MARKET

    Targeted market sweep

Not a browse. We move through the districts relevant to your categories, collecting prices, MOQs and stall numbers in a structured list.

  2. DAY 1 · EVENING

    Shortlist triage

Same-day sorting of what you saw into visit / photograph / drop, while everything is still fresh.

  3. DAY 2 · FACTORY A

    First real factory

Out of the market into the manufacturing towns. Same product, different economics, camera usually welcome.

  4. DAY 2 · FACTORY B

    Second factory, comparison terms

The point of two visits in one day is that the second quote arrives informed by the first.

  5. DAY 2 · WRAP

    Quotes and follow-up list

Every quote normalised to one specification before anyone leaves the table.

Filming feasibility

Camera access in Yiwu.

One of the most camera-friendly clusters in China, with the caveat that individual stalls set their own rules.

  • Typical answerMarket aisles are generally filmable; factories usually agree with two weeks of notice.
  • Ask this earlyTwo to three weeks. Individual stalls can often be asked the same day.
  • What gets refusedSome brand-name stalls decline, and any line producing under a foreign-brand NDA.
  • Practical noteExpect a lot of ambient noise and mixed lighting — plan for it rather than discovering it on day one.

How we arrange filming permission

Timing

Best time to come — and when to stay away.

Seasonal windows

  • 01.Best months: March–June and September–November, before and after the summer heat.
  • 02.Peak order building for Western Christmas runs roughly July–October — floors are busy and slower to host.
  • 03.January–February: Chinese New Year shuts most suppliers for one to three weeks, with slow recovery either side.
  • 04.Canton Fair months (April and October) pull many Yiwu suppliers to Guangzhou — plan around it if you need to meet them here.

When a visit wastes your money

  • Visiting in the two weeks around Chinese New Year. Very little is actually running.
  • Assuming market stalls are the manufacturers. Many are traders, which is fine — as long as you know which you are dealing with.
  • Trying to cover multiple unrelated categories in one trip. Yiwu will let you, and the results will be shallow.

Once a year

Yiwu Fair: the week the whole market fits under one roof.

Every October the market's breadth is compressed into a floor you can walk in a day. It is the single best week of the year to come to Yiwu — provided you follow it with factory days rather than flying home with a bag of samples.

  • WhenEvery October. The 32nd edition runs 21–24 October 2026 at the Yiwu International Expo Centre.
  • ScaleAround 3,000 exhibitors over 110,000 m². The preceding edition recorded 186,000 buyer visits, roughly 30,200 of them from outside China.
  • Why pair it with factoriesA fair shows you samples and salespeople. A factory shows you the line, the tooling and the real capacity. Doing both in one trip is the point — shortlist on the floor, verify the next morning, 30–60 minutes away.
  • What we handleA target list before you land, routing by category on the floor, and one or two factory days immediately after. The market itself stays open throughout.
  • Plan aroundFair week is also peak Christmas order season, and Yiwu hotels and drivers are booked solid. Fix dates early or the factory days will not fit.
  • What we do not doWe do not sell booth space, register you as an exhibitor, or act as a commission-taking sourcing agent. You buy from the factory; we get you in front of the right one.

Fair dates are set by the organisers and do move. Confirm the current edition on yiwufair.com before booking flights.
